Chathuri Dissanayake MBBS FCICM
Dr Chathuri Dissanayake qualified from the University of Adelaide and undertook Intensive Care training through Royal Prince Alfred Hospital, Sydney, Sir Charles Gairdner Hospital, Perth, and Fellowship at Guy's and St Thomas' NHS Foundation Trust, London and Nepean Hospital, Sydney. She is a Staff Specialist in the Intensive Care Service and a member of the ECMO service at RPAH. She has a keen interest in severe cardio-respiratory failure, echocardiography and extracorporeal cardio-respiratory supports. She is an examiner for the College of Intensive Care Medicine and a supervisor of training.
David Gattas MBBS MMed FRACP FCICM
A/Prof Gattas graduated from the University of Sydney and undertook intensive care training at the Royal North Shore Hospital, Royal Prince Alfred Hospital and Toronto, Canada. He is a Senior Staff Specialist, Intensive Care, Royal Prince Alfred Hospital; Clinical Associate Professor, Sydney Medical School, University of Sydney; Chair, RPA Clinical Emergency Response System Steering Committee; Director of Research, Intensive Care, Royal Prince Alfred Hospital; and Member, Clinical Trials Sub-committee of the Sydney LHD Ethics Review Committee. He has previously been Treasurer, ANZICS Clinical Trials Group Executive Committee; Honorary Research Fellow, Critical Care & Trauma Division, The George Institute for Global Health; and Elected Representative, NSW Regional Committee, College of Intensive Care Medicine.
Heike Koelzow MD FRCA EDICM FCICM FANZCA
Dr Heike Koelzow qualified from Ludwig-Maximilian-University, Munich, Germany 1990 and achieved her Medical Doctorate (M.D.) 1997. Fellowship of the Royal College of Anaesthetists UK 1997, European Diploma in Intensive Care Medicine 2001, Fellowship of the College of Intensive Care Medicine of Australia and New Zealand and Fellowship of the Australian and New Zealand College of Anaesthetists 2004. She is a Senior Staff Specialist in Intensive Care Medicine, RPAH, Sydney and a VMO Anaesthetics, Canterbury Hospital, Sydney. Dr Koelzow is Convenor for the BASIC Assessment and Support in Intensive Care Course at RPAH, Member of the Interdisciplinary Tracheostomy Team at RPAH and has an interest in Critical Care Echocardiography.
Jessica Lane MBBS Bachelor of Nursing FCICM
Dr Jessica Lane graduated from the University of Sydney and undertook Intensive Care training through the Royal Prince Alfred Hospital (RPAH) and Wollongong Hospital, and Fellowship through RPAH. Dr Lane is a Staff Specialist at RPAH and co-ordinates the education, examination preparation and teaching programs. She is an examiner for the College of Intensive Care Medicine and a supervisor of training.
Paul Phipps MBBS BPharm PhD FRACP FCICM
A/Professor Paul Phipps graduated from the University of Sydney and after completing his PhD undertook thoracic medicine and ICU training at RPAH and the John Radcliffe Hospital, UK. He is the Director of the ICU at Chris O'Brien Lifehouse. He is a Clinical Associate Professor of Intensive Care Medicine, University of Sydney, and was Director Intensive Care Services, Royal Prince Alfred Hospital, Sydney, as well as Director Intensive Care Services, Manly, Mona Vale and Ryde Hospitals, Sydney.
Nudrat Rashid MBBS MSc (Hons) FCICM
Dr Nudrat Rashid graduated from Ahmadu Bello University, Nigeria, before completing her specialist training in Intensive Care Medicine through Royal North Shore Hospital (RNSH) and Royal Prince Alfred Hospital (RPAH). She subsequently completed a Master of Science (MSc) in Medicine from the University of Edinburgh, Scotland.
Dr Rashid is a Senior Staff Specialist in Intensive Care at Royal Prince Alfred Hospital and serves as the Director of the Organ Donation and Transplantation Unit for Sydney Local Health District. She is also a Donation Medicine Specialist, with a strong commitment to advancing organ and tissue donation practice. She has a particular interest in medical education, echocardiography, and donation medicine. Dr Rashid is one of the national lead facilitators for the Family Donation Conversation and Practical Organ Donation (POD) workshops. In addition she serves as the Supervisor of Training at the Chris O'Brien Lifehouse.
Timothy Southwood MBBS MSc FCICM AFRACMA
Associate Professor Timothy Southwood serves as a Co-Director, Senior Staff Specialist and ECMO Intensivist in the Intensive Care Service of Royal Prince Alfred Hospital and is a Clinical Associate Professor in the Sydney Medical School of The University of Sydney.
A/Prof Southwood graduated from the University of Sydney and commenced Intensive Care training at Blacktown, North Shore and Royal Prince Alfred Hospital. He currently maintains leadership roles in research, education and clinical governance. His research interests include systems of care, most recently those related to ECMO service delivery, as well as anticoagulation strategies for ECMO support. Amongst other educational interests A/Prof Southwood is a program coordinator for the Master of Critical Care Medicine ECMO Unit of Study at the University of Sydney.
In addition to holding clinical and governance roles at Royal Prince Alfred Hospital and the NSW adult ECMO retrieval service, he is a co-chair for the Intensive Care Working Group for the NSW Single Digital Patient Record Implementation Authority and is a member of a number of NSW ACI and CEC Committees. A/Prof Southwood has also served as Director of Medical Services and Director of ICU at the Mater Hospital, North Sydney.
Sanjay Tarvade MBBS MD(Medicine) MRCP(UK) FCICM DDU(Critical Care)
Dr Sanjay Tarvade qualified from the University of Mumbai and undertook physician training with the Royal College of Physicians. He undertook ICU training at Nepean Hospital and also attained his DDU – Diploma in Diagnostic Ultrasound (Critical Care). Dr Tarvade is a Staff Specialist at the Royal Prince Alfred Intensive Care Service, is a VMO at Strathfield Private Hospital and is the Supervisor for trainees undertaking DDU (Critical Care).
Richard Totaro MBBS FRACP FCICM
Dr Richard Totaro is the Director of the Intensive Care Service at Royal Prince Alfred Hospital, the ICU lead of the RPAH ECMO service and a VMO at Strathfield Private Hospital.
Dr Totaro graduated from the University of New South Wales, and trained at Royal North Shore Hospital, the Royal Alexandra Hospital for Children, Camperdown, and did a critical care fellowship at Rush Presbyterian-St Luke's Hospitals in Chicago, Illinois. His clinical interests include extracorporeal respiratory and cardiac support.
He is a member of the General Clinical RCA Review Committee of the NSW Clinical Excellence Commission, and is Chair of the Number 2 Trust Fund Rights of Private Practice Committee at RPAH. He also holds clinical and governance roles at Royal Prince Alfred Hospital, the NSW adult ECMO retrieval service, and is a member of NSW ACI and CEC Committees.
Dr Totaro was Director of the Intensive Care Unit at the Chris O'Brien Lifehouse from its opening until 2022.
